5 out of 5 stars Great Product   November 16, 2006

I just purchased the 40 oz. size. The cap fits well and seals well. The company told me that all the different sizes use the same cap now, so there is no fit problem. The bottle is well finished and strong. Easy to drink from. It is wonderful to be using stainless steel now, and no longer be using Nalgene, which is polycarbonate plastic, and a possible health hazard
(bisphenol A).

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Water Bottle   March 10, 2006

Having long ago dumped the pop and coffe habits, I am a long time water drinker of 60 to 80 oz a day. But, I was tired of buying water at a dollar (or more) a bottle ... so I tried travel mugs ... and found they had too little capacity (requiring too frequent refilling) and their lids leaked a lot when not kept upright. So, I tried a plastic water bottle ... only to find the plastic taste and lingering soap aftertaste didn't really add to my water drinking experience. I thought "doesn't anyone make a stainless steel water bottle" ... and Klean Kanteen does ! I've had it for about a week now and I absolutely love it. It holds 27 ouces, fits nicely in my briefcase, never leaks, has a handsome masculine "steel and black" look, allows for wide mouth or "pop top" drinking methods AND solves a problem I only thought of AFTER I purchased the bottle. The problem?

As most of you know by now, with plastic pop-top or "sports" drinking bottles, you SQUEEZE the bottle to get the water to come out ... what to do with a steel sports top bottle? Suck? Sure ... but what happens when you suck on a plastic water bottle ... the sides collapse. Since they are leak proof, pop-top water bottles have no way for air to get in to replace the water you're sucking out. What will they do on a STEEL water bottle where the sides surely aren't going to collapse as a result of your sucking on the mouthpiece? There's a very clever little rubber valve that's built into the lid that allows air IN while you're sucking on the mouthpiece but doesn't allow water to escape when you're not. The fact that it makes the bottle sound like a small bird chirping while you drink ... well ... it's kind of cute.

In addition to the pop top and screw top (wide mouth), the Kanteen also comes with a cap and a cap keeper (so you won't lose the cap) to allow you to keep the mouthpiece covered when you're in environments you don't want soiling your mouthpiece.

A few notes to those considering this purchase:

A) This is not an insulated container, so don't think about keeping hot coffee, tea or chocolate in it unless you plan to wear mittens while holding the container and don't care how quickly the contents cool off.

B) Because it's not insulated, (nor did I expect it to be), when you fill this container with COLD liquid, if you live in a humid environment, condensation WILL form on the outside. This isn't a problem for me, but it's worth noting if 1) you plan to keep the filled bottle near or in contact with paperwork (as in your briefcase or school bag) or 2) if you will be using it in an environment where a wet surface might be hard to hold on to. These don't pose problems for me, but I can see where they might for some.

AS for clean up, the bottle cleans quickly and easily with no soap aftertaste ... I'm totally thrilled. And with water running around $1 per 20oz bottle, this thing paid for itself in a matter of days.

5 out of 5 stars Great water bottle   March 23, 2008

After going through about 1 standard water bottle a day I decided I needed to follow the 1st and most importaint R of the 3, Reduce.

After extensiveley searching for a nice glass water bottle with no avail I decided to try reusing glass beverage bottles, only to find the cap started rusting after about a week of use. Having quite a delemma I decided to look into metal water bottles, trying to avoid any sort of plastic. Many friends have told me I'm crazy, but I can most definitely taste the plastic leeched into the water from plastic bottlees.

After doing a bit of research and finding that stainless steel is the best material to go with I found the Klean Kanteen here on Amazon, and decided to go with it. I'm very glad I did, the Klean Kanteen is a superb product.

The Klean Kanteen is very durable, "Klean" i.e. leeches no particles into the water (I have very keen taste), comfortable to hold, packs away well into bookbags and the such, and it looks sharp. A great bottle all around.

While I do agree with the other reviewer that it would be much better if the bottle came with the stainless steel cap. It's still a great bottle, and the plastic cap works just fine. Worrying about plastic on the 1" diameter cap at the top of the bottle is just a bit silly in my opinion.

One thing I was wondering when I was buying was what are the exact dimensions? Amazon doesn't include them so here they are: 10.5" tall with cap, 2.75" diameter base.

5 out of 5 stars Great product - replace your nalgenes!   June 7, 2007

I've been completely satisfied with my Klean Kanteen bottles, which I've had for over 6 months now. Water tastes delicious, even after sitting in the bottle for extended periods of time. Never had a leak, the lids of all sorts fit very snug - and the fat threads on the lids prevent cross-threading (a concern I had with my Sigg bottle). Sure, the sports lids squeaks a bit while drinking, but as long as you take the micro-second it takes to recognize to rotate the vent upwards when drinking out of it, you won't have the problem of sucking in air bubbles. I'm very surprised to hear about the rusting that others have mentioned. I've been giving Klean Kanteens as gifts to friends and family and no one has had a rust issue!

I was initially concerned about using the steel bottles in the mountains in freezing weather, but during two weeks in Alaska this spring, the bottles had no more freezing problems than I ever had with plastic nalgenes! Of course for either product you would need insulated water bottle parkas...

I'm also excited about the Guyot Designs steel bottles that are beginning to come out on the market - and rumor is they'll be putting out double-walled stainless steel bottles this summer, providing an insulated option!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding product   April 6, 2007

I think these bottles are great: environmentally friendly, safe, extremely durable. They seem quite light for being made out of stainless steel. I've had some for over one year and they are in excellent shape. Someone mentioned the rust problem. Klean Kanteen has a recall on the bottles which developed rust on the bottom. This is not a problem which usually occurs with their bottles, it just happened with a defective batch they put out recently. If you call them, they will send you a replacement free. Mine arrived within 3 days. I think that the KleanKanteen bottles are outstanding and very long-lived.
