Amazon.com Review By crushing coffee beans rather than grinding them, this electric mill produces uniform granules to preserve flavor and aroma. The machine can be adjusted for fine (espresso), medium (drip), or coarse (percolator) granules. The bean container holds enough for up to 20 cups of coffee, and a dial controls the amount of time the mill operates so varying amounts of beans can be crushed. Both the bean and coffee containers can be removed for easy operation. A 1-1/2-tablespoon scoop is included, and its angled handle doubles to scrape away excess particles of coffee. With both containers in place, the mill, clad in black plastic, measures 8-1/2 inches wide, 8-3/4 inches high, and 5 inches deep. --Fred Brack

I don't understand the negative reviews September 22, 2003 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I purchased the B & D grinder fully intending to return it to the seller (They have a no questions asked guarantee and actually encourage you to try a product and return it if you don't like it) after reading all the negative reviews. I figured "what the heck...for 30 bucks it's worth a try." I don't know yet about many of the complaints about longevity as I have had it for only a few days. But the quality of grinding is great. Maybe not as good as a $500 grinder but more than adequate for my home espresso machine. As for static causing coffee to fly all over the place... I open the lid slowly and carefully set it on the counter upside down and I actually have far less mess than I did with my blade grinder. Most of the negative reviews are from early in this year or last year so maybe B & D has improved the product. I have no idea if this is so, but I highly recommend the grinder if you don't want to spend big bucks and want a consistent grind for espresso or a coffee maker.
The Next Level Of Flavor For 30 Bucks May 16, 2002 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I've used this 3 times so far and wonder how I ever lived without it! For a measly [price] I have graduated from those gawdawful grinders [that grind unevenly, take shaking and holding forever...yuk!] to MILLING my beans. There is no comparison between beans you mill fresh and beans ground a week ago or more. Fresh milled tastes much richer with less bitterness. Fine grinds taste different than course. You can customize your favorite flavor and 'save' your settings. This is the coffee afficianado's dream. The device does take some brains. If you can use B&D powertools you can use this. You have to clean the spout every day. The tool is supplied and takes a second...when you have time later you can fine clean it with a toothbrush or q-tip for ease. The grind holding cup is roomy and portable, both cups are washable, the machine is quiet and setting it is easy. IT looks really cool too. Other mills can cost [more]. This things gives you consistency and customized flavor for a fraction of that. Pay attention to your portions [they include a bean scoop!],high quality beans [arabica], fresh water, good filters, keeping the mill clean and set right, and keeping your cone-drip-coffee maker cleaned weekly with vinegar, monthly with lime-away or CLR. If you get these habits locked in, owning this unit might put Starbucks out of business. Why? Because your favorite coffee is SET! ... Good coffee requires that you pay attention. [ Paying attention actually makes *all of life go better!] The change in coffee flavor will impress the heck out of your spouse. Precison milling is a must for anyone who has had trouble making good coffee, or who craves consistent flavor. You can't beat this model for price and function.
Other reviewers must be crazy January 24, 2003 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me start off by saying that I once worked for a year and a half for that twin bastion of rampant capitalism and fine coffee: Starbucks. Before that, I worked for a year at my local roaster (which was, inevitably, put out of business by: Starbucks). So I know my beans. This isn't some [expensive] Capresso contraption made of brushed chrome and Italian mongoose skin (or some equally ridiculous and utterly unnecessary "luxury"). And unless you're brewing 60 pots of coffee a day, I don't see why you would have a problem with it. It grinds the beans very well: too well, in fact, the first few times. Make sure you play with the grind setting a little before you risk taking a drink of whatever you just brewed (my first pot, thanks to my mistake of playing to the finer grind side, had the consistency of jet fuel and tasted like industrial waste: my mistake). But after you've gotten the grind setting right, having a good bean and a good coffeemaker will get you a fine cup. As far as other reviewers complaining about what a mess it makes, I have to wonder if these people have ever been around coffee grinds before. It makes no more mess than any other burr grinder I've ever seen, and in fact makes much LESS than any blade grinder I've used. This is the best bang for your buck that I can see on the market. Buy without worry.
CBM7B Coffee Mill December 28, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I recently purchased the B&D SmartGrind Deluxe. I replaced my Krups grinder. I needed something that would provide a more consistant grind for the new coffee maker (which we discovered requires a finer and more consistant grind, consistant being the key word). I have had no problems with this grinder. No static cling, no "supermess", just consistant ground coffee. I set the grind halfway between fine and medium and the timer to 25 seconds for the amount of coffee that we use. So far I have found this to be an excellent product. It is exactly what I was searching for.
Beautiful Beginners Burr still running strong August 2, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have now had my SmartGrind for over two years. I use high quality dark roasted beans for my coffee. I do have to go through a couple of contortions to keep the mess down. But the little effort I put forth for an enjoyable first cup, EVERY morning, is worth it. Occasionally the grinder will bog for a moment when the beans are particularly oily, other then that I love it. I do let the motor run for a second or two after the beans are crushed to clear the grinder.
