5 out of 5 stars Poinsettia is a soft BRICK RED color--think Southwest color palette , not fire engine red   October 22, 2007
47 out of 50 found this review helpful

I bought several sets of the Poinsettia color in the queen size for Christmas gifts, two for wedding gifts (first Christmas together December sheets) and one for us.

The color description pictures had not been posted yet when I made my purchase so I was expecting Poinsettia floral sheets. Any Poinsettia pattern would have been acceptable to me since these are 200 gram velvet flannel and were intended for Holiday use only.

The sheets were backordered. The color description pictures were finally posted before the sheets arrived. I was disappointed that they were not floral, but the solid red would also be fine for Christmas. When they arrived, they were NOT the fire engine, Santa Claus red that I anticipated--(The color on my computer screen is very accurate--I should have had a clue! I was thinking they should be the SAME color as a RED Christmas Poinsettia regardless of what the picture was showing. Maybe they don't know what color a RED Poinsettia is in Portugal.)

These Poinsettia sheets are actually a soft brick red color--reminiscent of a red you might find in a Southwest color scheme or perhaps a Victorian Christmas red. This shade of red will lend itself to year round use so I am still very pleased with my purchase.

I laundered my sheets the day they arrived. They washed beautifully without excess color bleeding into the water as I had anticipated from red flannel. There was a very minimal amount of lint in the dryer screen--less even than the small amount of lint collected from the regular 200 gram flannel sheets. The Pinzon 150 gram flannel sheets produced a lot more dryer lint.

I was expecting a long nap on these sheets. There was actually less excess "fuzz" on them than was on the regular 200 gram sheets after washing. The regular 200 gram sheets felt more stiff and looked like they may be more prone to pilling than these velvet flannel sheets as there was more of an uneven texture on the surface of the regular sheets after laundering. In fact, I was disappointed in the softeness of the regular 200 gram sheets. These velvet sheets almost seem like they have been sheered to make the fuzzy surface perfectly smooth and even. The velvet set is both SMOOTH and SOFT.

When not using flannel sheets, I prefer an 800 thread count 100% cotton sheet set. I do not like scritchy sheets! I am picky about my sheets--I like soft comfy sheets!

One of the newlywed couples I gifted this set to has an 18" thick mattress. I will update this review after I hear how these sheets fit their bed.

These 200 gram velvet flannel sheets are much nicer than the regular 200 gram flannel sheets. The velvet flannel sheets are softer. Given a choice between the two, I recommend the VELVET flannel sheets--they are a much higher quality.

Update 12-23-2007: I heard from one of my newlywed neices--the one with the 18" mattress. These sheets fit their thick mattress with room to spare--the elastic tucks under their mattress. She told me they love these sheets so much they just wash them and put them right back on their bed. In fact, she said they saved the label that came with the sheets so they could find the same kind again.

A tip I learned from my grandmother for keeping flannel sheets/blankets their softest: Add some Borax to your wash water.

RIT DYE: After Christmas I decided to change the colors in our bedroom. The Poinsettia colored sheets didn't quite match and none of the other color choices were right either. I wanted something in a deep rose to burgandy shade. I didn't need to match the color exactly, but wanted a complimentary color. RIT powdered dye did the trick--I used the washing machine method and two boxes of dye (also added salt). It changed the hue of the Poinsettia sheets to a shade that would compliment my new decor. The sheets are 100% cotton and dyed beautifully. If you only need to change the shade of the base fabric or want to brighten a shade, RIT dye is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars The best flannel sheets EVER   November 7, 2007

I have been sleeping on flannel sheets for over 20 years and without a doubt, these are the best I have ever slept on! Washing and drying produces very little fuzz and no shrinking, they are thick and soft, with a wonderfully soft velvety nap that doesn't disappear after several washings (like others I have- soft and velvety until 4 or 5 washings- then the 'velvet' goes away). The cloth is tightly woven, so no "see-through" like I have seen on other, much cheaper sheets, but are not heavy or unwieldy. They fit my Temperpedic mattress great (needs DEEP pockets). I just wish they had more colors!

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with velvet flannel now!!!   December 29, 2007

Thanks to Amazon, I have become a self professed 'sheet snob'; luckily for me (courtesy of Amazon) at an affordable price!

Last year, for the first time I had the fortunate opportunity to purchase and experience 500 and 800 thread count sheets made my High Country Linens that I bought here. My Mom, my Aunt and myself fell in love with them so much that we donated all of our other sheets and replaced them with these wonderful sheets. I STILL LOVE them as they are durable, silky smooth with a nice, weighty feel vs the old 150 or 200 thread count flimsy sheets I was used to.

I have trouble getting to sleep at night and also staying asleep at night and one of the worst things are when you have little kids is to be sleep deprived. One of the worst ways to wake is wake up in my opinion is at 2am shivering from being cold even though you have socks, sheets and your blanket covering you. Although my beloved sheets (Yes, I'm a little nutty over sheets) were FABULOUS, I had to admit that I was still freezing on the really cold nights. I grew up with my parents giving me flannel sheets during the winter time and although they WERE warmer, I HATED the pilling effect after a few washes so I refused to give in. Until that is, I found out there was such a thing as 'velvel flannel'.

Talk about the WOW effect!!! When I took them out of the package, they were smooth but sort of heavy feeling from being flat in the package. I immediately washed them and I could tell when I took them out of the washer that I was going to love them (I DO use fabric softener but I'll be looking to change to something else so that it doesn't deteriorate the fabric more than it needs to over time). I was literally grinning with delight when I took them out of the dryer and my husband was rolling his eyes at me since I had JUST changed our sheets last night.

We have a 15" mattress that I have trouble fitting our waterproof mattress cover over but this sheet had plenty of room to spare so I do believe that it will easily fit a thicker mattress. Surprisingly, even though there was more room, it didn't get loose over night either when I tucked the excess under my mattress, which was nice.

Talk about SMOOTH, luxurious, soft and oh so warm and cozy!!!! I didn't wake once last night from being cold or even hot, everything was perfect! When I put these new velvet flannel sheets on, our little one even proclaimed that he was sleeping on them with Mommy instead of his bed and even had me change out his Pottery Barn Kids choo choo pillow because he decided it was 'dirty' and that Mommy's was COMFIER although his was just changed last night too.

There was some very lightweight lint in the dryer but that was to be expected with flannel. It's my hope that over time, there will be less so it stays in my sheets vs losing it's softness over time. But usually there is a TEENY bit of pilling with even good flannel even in the first wash and there is NONE whatesoever on these sheets!!!! What surprised me is that I dried them on Medium for 80 minutes and they came out bone dry. I expected them to require more drying time or on high heat (I was worried about shrinkage which did NOT happen or if any did, it did not effect mine at all.)

I got the bone color and ordered extra standard pillows and it's great that the dye lots match perfectly (I've had them arrived mismatched before in other brands), it's a nice, soft color but it's a bit on the 'yellow' spectrum for a bone color in my opinion. It IS still nice...sort of a cream - yellow color but if I had my choice, I would have rather have had a more neutral ivory / bone color instead. I LOVE white sheets in the summer but for some reason, I like a more muted color in the winter and these are nice.

I purchased mine when they had these in the gold box deals for $39.99 for the king size and $5.99 for extra pillow cases and I'm kicking myself for not ordering more!!! :-(

My wishes / complaints? I wish they had more standard pillow cases in stock, I WISH they had the 200 thread count in SUPIMA velvet flannel in a TWIN and FULL size for my kid's beds!!!! And of course, I wish that they'd run that $39.99 special again!!! :-) Oh! And more COLORS!!!! I'd LOVE a taupe color in these sheets!!!

Even if I had to pay the current $79.99 on these, I still would NOT regret it, they are scrumptious!!!! You will not regret it! I also think that these would make a WONDERFUL gift!!! Just be sure to get some for yourself too!! :-) Here's to some happy, comfy ZZZZZ's....

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Flannel Sheets Yet-Silky Soft   December 19, 2007

The first thing we look for in flannel sheets is "Made in Portugal". The next thing we check out is the weight of the flannel. These sheets meet all the criteria. They ring in at almost 6 oz/square yard. I thought that luxury was 5.3 oz. These are generously cut, well made (generous hems) and silky soft. All flannel pills and we don't find any problems with these sheets. Heavy, soft and very warm. The best flannel sheets we have ever owned and we have used flannel exclusively for over 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars Best Flannel Sheets EVER   November 26, 2007

I just purchased the 200 gram flannel sheets in saffron, and they are the best flannel sheets I've ever owned. They are so thick/dense you cannot see through them when you hold them up to the light. Whatever process they use to create the "velvet" part of these sheets is amazing. It feels like velvet and hasn't pilled yet (washed weekly, slept on them for a week already). The color is nice, too; sort of a very gold yellow color. They are so warm! No more frozen feet!
